l live in a place called Brown County Indiana.  It is small town living at it's very finest! It is a place where typical Hoosier language rules!  "Me and her seen him setting on the see-ment smoking a see-gar and he then he lay down a spell. I got no idea bout when he'll be comin' down the road a piece".  Along with the terrain and the tourists, our favorite reasons for living here are our 'Mayberry Moments".

Nashville, Indiana is a small town in South Central Indiana.  Directly between Bloomington and Columbus Indiana.  It is down the road-a-piece from Gnaw Bone, Beanblossom, Story, Fruitdale and Morgantown.

Our predominant industry is tourism.  There are 700 residents and 300 PLUS retail shops, restaurants, hotels and candy stores.  There are only about 14,000 residents in the whole of Brown County. Millions of visitors each year support our local artisans and crafts makers.  Fall season finds our roads choked with traffic and restaurants with lines.

We have a local newspaper that is famous for it's 'sheriff's log' so if you get arrested, we'll all know about it.

Our restaurants provide a range of home cooking to sophisticated gourmet.  Ditto our lodging industry which offers weekend cabins, B&B,  park camping (tent and rv) and mid-price and luxury hotels.  There are historic buildings with antiques and art galleries featuring current and vintage art works.

The HONEY and I collect "Mayberry Moments" and hope to remember them long enough to share with our friends.
Cathy's Cafe The Post Office

Cathy's Cafe
Morgantown, IN

Cathy's Cafe might be a place found in any small town and it is much loved in Morgantown, IN.  Morgantown is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner when coming or going to Nashville, IN  - down the road a piece from where we live at.  There is a weekly menu and daily specials including home made pies.

A few Saturday's ago we happened to consume Cathy's with our rapidly growing 'regular crowd'.  So many of us showed up that we had to hook two large oval tables together and at least two people had to sit at the rounded 'crack' between the tables.

Our group included SIX performers from a very popular local theatre.  Loud and boisterous at the quietest of times, the decibel level exceeded polite conversation at a Nascar race.   After the 'excitement' and autograph signing died down a little, we ordered our lunches.  Included on most plates were fried chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed peas, smooshy green beans, baked ham and some other kind of 'brownish' meat.

We wiped the plates clean while talking with mouths full of food.  Typical bad manners for theatre folks who haven't seen each other for a long spell.  So what was it about this event that caused the tingle of the Mayberry Moment event?   The HONEY who is also a performing star claimed it to be one.  I guess you had to be there for the noise, bad jokes, bad songs, loud noise et all.  What you really needed to see was the stunned silence left behind for the relieved staff and remaining diners.  It was awesome.

The Post Office

Down here we actually have a choice of Post Offices within 10 - 20 minute driving range.  The HONEY often finds Mayberry Moments at the post office.  One of them is closed for lunch hour.  Another closes at 11:30 on THURSDAYS!!  Another sends staff to lunch when there are 15 customers in line.

And the Honey can make a Mayberry moment out of things that send my temper flaring.  Last Friday we were in the Nashville Post Office in the early afternoon.  There were 15 people in line ahead of us.  Oh Boy.  The Honey said he would wait in the car and I gave him that 'look'.  The Oh NO You Don't one.

The post office is actually quite a place to meet and greet local folks.  Those in town have no home or business mail boxes so they must use p.o. boxes and they trickle in all day long.  Gossip is exchanged, arrest reports updated, and health and well being is warmly wished.  When I go myself and stand in line, I am largely ignored.  When the HONEY is there, nearly everyone has a moment of time to spend.

In their defense, the Nashville Indiana Post Office is clean and friendly. Past Friday had a perky and attentive agent.  She was polite, offered every customer add on sales like stamps, envelopes etc.  She made every effort to exchange a 20 second conversation with each customer.

At a busy time of day, she was the only worker in sight.   In the line last Friday were people getting their forwarding mail set up for the winter (there is 90 day maximum), they are collecting huge buckets of left behind mail, sending out things to over seas destinations, et all.  Why does everyone wait until Friday to take care of all THEIR business?  My excuse is that the Morgantown location was closed at 11:30 on Thursday.

Oh... and as it became MY turn, the 2nd agent came up and commented about how many people there were in line.  He tried to give me a helpful smile and he got my best hateful scowl in return.
